CONTEMPORARY SOUTH-EAST: CHRONICLES OF A JOURNEY THROUGH GREEK CALABRIA' PROJECT

The project "SUD-EST CONTEMPORANEI: Chronicles of a Journey in Greek Calabria", an activity funded to the Municipality of Bova by the Region of Calabria - Department of Culture - Action 2 - Strengthening the museum system - Annuality 2018 - CAP Calabria Funds 2014/2020 - Axis 6 Action 6.7.1 This was the second project implemented under the curatorship of Prof. Pasquale Faenzae and an integrated communication campaign by the photographer Stefano Mileto.

The project made it possible to create a new exhibition hall, modern display cases and an avant-garde anti-burglary system, and to enrich the museum's collections with additional works of art, archaeological artefacts and ethnographic objects. Among the works on display is the etching illustrating the town of Bova, printed by Domenico Antonio Parrino at the end of the 17th century for the prestigious volumes by Giovanni Battista Pacichelli entitled Il Regno di Napoli in prospettiva diviso in dodici provincie, published in Naples in 1703; the lithograph with a view of Bova by Edward Lear (1812-1888), published in London in 1852 in the Journals of a Landscape Painter in Southern Calabria, and then several late medieval Tournois from Frankish Greece, which illustrate the historical and cultural importance of one of the most important treasures of Angevin coins found in the Bova area.

The rooms of the museum are enriched with interesting artefacts of Grecanico craftsmanship, such as the musupare, typical wooden moulds for a particular Lenten cheese, and the drum that belonged to the Bova herald Antonino Altomonte (1896-1980), who, with the roll of his instrument and his unmistakable voice, marked the most important moments in the entire Grecanico territory. The contemporary art installation by Roberto Lucifero on the roof of the "Gerhard Rohlfs" Museum is also worthy of mention. It depicts a section of a compass rose, indicating the two cardinal points, east and south, from which the main Mediterranean civilisations that have influenced the culture of southern Aspromonte originated. The atypical placement of the artwork is not accidental, but responds to a precise objective of the artist: to show the art installation from Google Street View, in order to achieve the internalisation of the village of Bova. The exhibition, in an urban museum vision, also included the Giudecca and the ceramic works of Antonio Puja Veneziano.
