THE HISTORY

The "Gerhard Rohlfs" Museum of Calabrian Greek in Bova represents an important milestone in the local development strategy that has been pursued in the village of Bova for 25 years.  The decision to create it was the result of a process of local development that allowed Bova to live its "cultural identity" more consciously and to promote it also for historical-touristic and cultural purposes. This is why the structure of the museum was created, to tell, through the history of the Calabrian Greek language, the story of a community that still speaks it and lives on the slopes of the southern Aspromonte, in particular in the municipalities of Bova, Bova, Marina, Condofuri, Roghudi and Roccaforte del Greco, all overlooking the Fiumara dell'Amendolea in the province of Reggio Calabria. Its realisation is mainly due to the will of the administrations that have succeeded each other in recent years in Bova and to the will of the community of Bova. The museum exhibition has been realised and enriched over the years thanks to the various local institutions (Calabria Region, Aspromonte Park Authority, GAL Area Grecanica, Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, etc.) that have contributed in various ways to its enhancement, and to the many private partners that have participated in events and projects. It is therefore a museum that has been created to crown a feeling and an experience of Bova and the Bovesi, who are and have always been a point of reference for the entire Grecanica area, as they were in the past, when the Chòra was the life and economic, cultural and religious centre of the area. A visit to the museum is an opportunity to learn more about the peculiarities of the Greek-Calabrian language and the millenary cultural identity of the Greeks of Calabria, recognised as a linguistic minority by national law no. 482/1999 and regional law no. 15/2003.

REALIZZAZIONE DELLA STRUTTURA

The building that houses the museum was renovated thanks to the Region of Calabria. Specifically with the PSR Calabria 2007-2013, Axis 3 - Protection and enhancement of the rural heritage - Measure 323 'Diversification into non-agricultural activities', year 2009. The Municipality of Bova took part in the public call for proposals in order to create a museum in the Borgo, in an area with a rural vocation. The Region of Calabria accepted the application for funding and allowed the recovery of an unused and unfinished public asset, helping the Municipality of Bova to complete it and thus gradually give shape to the Borgo's cultural enhancement strategy.

The renovation of the building, which had been left unfinished for years, aroused a sense of revenge against the 'status quo' among the community and the institutions. Not only did it change the physiognomy of a part of the village whose fate seemed doomed, but it also started a process of change/synergy between various public and private actors to complete a work that seemed destined to remain a skeleton. In this new perspective of action, the Municipality of Bova has implemented a "multi-pronged" strategy that has gradually allowed the building to be completed and become not only a museum rich in content, but also a cultural attraction for the village of Bova.

MUSEALISATION

Once the "container" was built, it was necessary to find the means to fill it with "contents". The municipality of Bova therefore asked the local institutions for help. In this way it was possible to proceed with the creation of the museum, which was funded by various sources: a first important grant in 2015 came from the Aspromonte National Park Authority, which allowed the creation of descriptive texts, museum panels and a better division of the spaces, activities supervised by Prof. Pasquale Faenza. The important donation, also from the Park Authority, of the photographic exhibition "Calabria contadina nelle immagini di Gerhard Rohlfs", curated by Prof. Antonio Panzarella, has made the museum important from an ethnographic point of view, as it has made it possible to learn about customs and traditions, starting from the photographs taken by Rohlfs during his many travels and continuing with the objects donated over the years by the Municipality of Bovese. The Gal Area Grecanica also financed the lighting of the museum with the PSR Calabria 2007-2013 Leader Approach - PSL Nèo Avlaci Measure 313. Since the inauguration of the museum, the Municipality of Bova, with the help of CAP funds from the Region of Calabria, but also from the Metropolitan City of RC, has always tried to improve it and add sections to make it more urban and 'en plein air'. For this reason, it has participated in various public tenders that have led to the funding of numerous PROJECTS, as described in detail below.
